Letter to Myself
Reflection for the Letter To Yourself
1. As an introspective task, how useful is this assignment? Why do you state so?
This assignment was useful to me in the sense that it taught me to be consistent with my writing. Writing in past tense is not easy, and I had to constantly correct myself because I kept writing in present tense. This assignment also introduced me to a different style of writing than what I am use to. I had to really think about how I would talk to myself as a younger child, because I could not use the mature language I use today.
2. Why would I ask you to perform such an introspective task? Why do you state so?
I believe you gave us this assignment to force us to be creative and use what we know to communicate with a different kind of audience (a younger or older version of ourselves). You challenged us to write something that required an understanding of what we have done all semester.
3. How successful was this task at self-reflection for you? Why so?
I think that I was successful in my self-reflection essay. I used appropriate language that a nine year old would understand as well as giving advice that would improve the future and make things more clear. I touched on many subjects in my essay, including my parents divorce. I think that if I had actually gotten a letter to myself ten years ago, it would have made things a lot easier for me.
4. Under the presumption you have completed the assigned task, as assigned, and truly, honestly attempted the concept to your best intentions, how would you rate your own work on a scale of 0 - 10? (Consider the Stephen Frye letter to be a 10 and writing a single sentence of, “this is stupid,” to be a 0) What shows as evidence of the score you’ve assigned your work?
I would consider my work a 10 because I think I did everything I could to go in depth with my writing. If you read my essay, you will see that I am being direct with my younger self and using appropriate language to persuade her that everything will be okay. This was a difficult essay to write in my opinion, but I think I executed it to the best of my ability as a writer.
