Reflection: Self-expertise as new literacy
My name is Taylor Lovell, the creator of this portfolio and a student of Dr. Brown. Literacy is about being able to portray our thoughts, stories, or facts to an audience by written words. My portfolio touches on several types of exercises that demonstrate my abilities as a writer and how I express myself through writing. Composing essays is what I feel is my personal expertise. I have learned that, as a person, I need to be able to express myself in a way that is healthy and possibly even academic. Writing essays is not a chore to me, because I like to think of it as story telling. Writing the Letter to Myself essay really helped me dive deeper into my thoughts and opened up my creativity. As a student in higher education, I feel that I have learned how to better myself as a writer, not only for english, but for other classes that will require me to write papers. Being a professional and organized writer is an important skill I will need for future classes as well as my future career. For example, my first writing assignment was on etiquette. This was not only a writing exercise, but a good source of information about professionalism. As on who has completed an e-portfolio, I have learned a lot about how to work a website and organize it. This is a way for not only my teacher to view my work, but others as well (unlike a hard copy portfolio). I believe that this assignment, though very detail oriented, is a great way to sum up my semester in english 1101.
The positive aspects of this term include growing as a writer and a literate human being. We focused more on those things than grammar, which makes sense because we should know grammar rules by now. The negative aspects of this class are that we did not get to read our last graphic novel and that some assignments we did in class never lead to larger assignments (like essays). I hope that the readers of this reflection can view my portfolio and see my strengths as well as my weaknesses. I hope that I have the tools needed for future writing assignments and that the skills that I learned in my 1101 class will aid me in my remaining college career. I believe that the skills Dr. Brown has taught me will help me succeed in my next english class and in my future as a literate human being.
